Description
The Newaygo County Prosecuting Attorney is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the Legal Secretary I position.
Excellent customer service and organizational skills are required.
On-site training is provided.
Under the supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney and Office Administrator, performs varied secretarial and support functions for the legal staff.
Activities include preparing and processing legal documents, preparing and issuing subpoenas, opening and maintaining case files, and providing general clerical support such as answering the telephone and assisting the public at a front counter.
Examples of Duties
Types motions, orders, subpoenas, notices and other legal documents.
Answers inquiries of attorneys, parties, victims, witnesses, and others regarding departmental procedures, schedules, case information and other matters.
May serve as receptionist and direct members of the public to other departments.
Drafts and types various motions, orders, warrants, subpoenas, and other legal forms and documents.
Types briefs and correspondence for the legal staff.
Proofreads documents for spelling, punctuation, grammar and format and prepares envelopes for mailing when necessary.
Opens criminal, juvenile and civil files and files all documentation.
Files documents with the court and continually updates files and logs until cases are closed.
Performs a variety of support tasks such as typing legal forms, copying, faxing, and filing.
Drafts routine orders motions and show cause documents.
Performs other duties as required.
Typical Qualifications
Education: High school graduation or equivalent.
Prefer advanced coursework in computer operations and legal secretarial areas and/or criminal justice.
Experience: One year of prior typist/secretarial experience, preferably in a legal setting providing a knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures.
Requires knowledge or experience with computer systems.
